Invest Europe, in collaboration with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), has unveiled the report “Protecting European Innovation: Private Equity’s Role in European Intellectual Property Rights.” This study examines the critical role of private equity and venture capital in fostering innovation through intellectual property (IP) across Europe.
Key insights from the report include:
• Over 100,000 trademark and patent filings analysed from 56,000 portfolio companies (2007-June 2023);
• Venture-stage companies with pre-existing trademarks attract 55% more funding; buyout-stage companies see a 68% boost;
• A 100% increase in investment correlates with a 10% growth in IP assets.
Highlights by country and sector:
• Italy leads in trademark registrations, averaging 2.5 filings per company, showcasing strong brand protection;
• Denmark excels in patent filings, averaging 1.5 applications per company, reflecting robust R&D capabilities;
• Biotech and Healthcare companies demonstrate high innovation with over two patents per company.
The report underscores a virtuous cycle: IP strengthens innovation and business competitiveness, while private equity fuels further IP development, aligning with EU goals to advance technological progress and economic growth.
Eric de Montgolfier, CEO of Invest Europe, highlighted the importance of innovation in driving economies forward, while João Negrão, Executive Director of EUIPO, emphasised IP's value as a critical asset for attracting investors.
